This building was built in 1928 by Italian architect Mario Palanti where Confectionery originally was “La Giralda”, where Gerardo Matos Rodriguez wrote his famous tango “La Cumparsita” in 1917. The tower at the northwest corner of the building dominates the skyline and serves as a gateway to the Avenida 18 de Julio, Montevideo’s main avenue. The Palacio Salvo can be found in most postcards of the city of Montevideo and Uruguay because it also remains as a national symbol.
