It is known as the “center” of Montevideo neighborhood the place whose axis is the Avenida 18 de Julio, from the Plaza Independencia to the street Ejido. It originates in what was formerly known as New Town, which referred to urban development outside the now defunct colonial city wall. In contrast, the colonial city is known as Ciudad Vieja (Old town)
Despite its name, it is not located at the geometric center of the city, since it is expanded to grow more east than west. Beyond its location, there is a high concentration of services, public and private offices, shops, cinemas and theaters, etc.. The centro of Montevideo is one of the busiest areas of the city.
Among its many buildings stand the Palacio Salvo, the Radisson Victoria Plaza Hotel, the Palace Lapido, Diaz Palace, the Tower of Professional Gaucho Tower, City Hall, etc.
